Greek settlers at Massalia planted the first French vineyards here around 600 BCE. Modern Provence is dominated by rosé — pressed pale, dry, and scented with garrigue herbs — but its reds deserve more attention: Bandol's Mourvèdre ages magnificently, and tiny Palette and Cassis hold onto local traditions in the face of the region's pink tide.
