Stretching from the Rhône delta to the Spanish border, this vast Mediterranean arc was for a century synonymous with volume. That era is over. Growers have pushed into the schist hills of Faugères, the amphitheatre of Pic Saint-Loup and the wind-scoured terraces of Roussillon, reviving gnarled old Carignan and Grenache and, in Banyuls and Maury, keeping France's great fortified tradition alive.
